Our History

1955

Founded by the Tropigas Gas Company, selling liquefied gas, but due to the high demand of household items, the company decided to venture into the business of electrical appliances

1988

The Tropigas company was acquired by Shell International, for the sales of liquefied gas and household appliances

1992

CETECO acquired the electrical appliance stores, separating them from the gas company. They established an alliance to cover a wider market range with the support of the La Curacao chain, which earned it’s position as the second leading household appliances store

1996

"Almacenes Tropigas" changes its format to a warehouses store, becoming more accessible to the popular segment of our countries

2000

The CETECO Group store chains were acquired by Grupo Unicomer, which allowed it to continue with an aggressive expansion plan and create new employment oppportunities in Central America

2001

“Almacenes Tropigas” implements a door to door modality - starting in El Salvador and extending in October of that same year, to the rest of the Central American countries. TropiKong, its emblematic character, is born

2005

The brand extension “Tropi Cash” starts by offering cash loans in Honduras. Currently, this format is found in the other countries as well.

2007

“Almacenes Tropigas” began operations in Belize as “Tropigas”

2011

The brand extension “TropiÓpticas” starts in El Salvador by offering visual health products and services. It has currently been expanded to other countries as a mobile program as well
